In late 2024, I pulled the data and ran some stats.
First, taking all of the now fully retired surveyors (those whose licenses have an ending date), it was found that the mean and median number of years of licensure is 35. With that in mind, the following is a graph of the licensed surveyors with 35 years or less of tenure divided into 5-year increments.

Following the track of 35 years, the following are graphs depicting the projected decline of the number of active, licensed Land Surveyors with some addition of new registrants along the way.
The first registrants we licensed in 1942. In the early 60’s licensing became mandatory and the number of registrants soared. Unfortunately it would appear that former registrants were not noted until 1985. There is a continuous rise in the numbers until an abrupt drop in 1985. As the data is more complete, the more recent data has been presented.
I have been compiling the statistics of the Registered Land Surveyors of Massachusetts with the limited data available from the Division of Professional Licensure. This survey is the first pass at parsing the data.

’I do not know’ - There is nothing wrong with not knowing. You can also not answer if you do not know.
‘Private Sector - Full Time’ - The individual is working in the private sector, surveying full time.
‘Private Sector - Part Time’ - The individual is working in the private sector, surveying part time.
‘Public Sector’ - The individual is working in the Public Sector, surveying for a Town, County, State Agency or Federal Agency. Teachers are included in this category.
‘Other Sector’ - The individual is working in a non surveying field. This includes exclusive GIS or Civil Engineering.
‘Retired’ - The individual is more or less fully retired.
‘Deceased’ - Self explanatory.
The data will not be sold. It will be used for fairly anonymous statistical analysis and publication on this site.
The answers provided will be compared to the answers provided by others. Multiple matches will be accepted as fact where multiple contradictions will be flagged for review. The flagged names will be listed and provided to volunteers to verify.
